Chiropraxis (manual therapy) is a hundred year old method of treatment, which came into being in the United States as an alternative to the often cruel, medical practices used at the end of twelve century. The basics of chiropraxis consist in a belief that human organism has an inborn capacity for self- healing. This is conditioned by the nerve impulses which flow freely between brain and the rest of our body. Manual procedure on the backbone is the main method of chiropraxis, with an aim to secure the proper functioning of the nervous system. Chiropractors constitute the third largest group of therapists which provide medial care in the USA, after the conventional medical practitioners and dentists.
Chiropraxis developed in 1895, when Daniel David Palmer, a successful self-trained healer from Davenport in Iowa who in his consulting office saw a caretaker working in the building in which he had his consultation room rented. This man had been deaf for 17 years and the reason for such impairment was attributed to the strenuous work. Palmer, who had been helping people with backbone problems, knew physiology, anatomy, treatment with the use of magnetic field and he was also a successful bioenergotherapist. He examined the patient to find a protruded, painful, dislocated vertebra in the upper part of the backbone. As it turned out later it was in this place where the man got hurt prior to the loss of hearing. The healer set the relocated vertebra with the sudden push and the patient regained his hearing. By setting the vertebra to the proper position he quickly relieved the responsible nerve.
Palmer named his new method a chiropraxis, which meant “done by hand”, from the Greek words cheir (hand) and praxis (exercise.) In 1897 he established a school, where he taught the new skill.
Currently, chiropraxis is widely known as a proper therapy for the treatment of pain. Palmer was most successful in treating diseases related to the neurological – muscle – skeleton disorders, which however account for the 90% of the cases.
